Your Home Directory

When you first log in to your ROCKCI DIY Virtual Server, you start out in your home directory.  This is the directory on the system that contains all files and directories pertaining to your specific user account. The system path to your directory is /usr/local/www/data/username where username is usually the first eight characters of your domain name (same as your login username).

As your home directory is a place you will refer to often, the UNIX operating system alows
a shortcut tilde  character (~) to refer to your home directory. ~username can be used instead of  /usr/local/www/data/ (Saves typing).
~username/somedirectory   =  /usr/local/www/data/username/somedirectory

Your account has "permissions" to access all files and directories contained in or below your home directory (with the exception of your logs directory and a few system files).  The directory structures above your home directory, contain system files and the files of other users of the system. neighbor's files.

It is important to understand file and directory  permissions to control access to your files and directories by users on the internet and other users of the system.
